Roots

In a deed dated 1324 Rorich von Burbach, a knight, solemny declared to become a liegeman of Johann, Count of Nassau. Snorrenburg castle, built by Rorich and his successors shortly thereafter, was the architectural manifestation of this feudal relationship between the knights of Burbach and the House of Nassau. Our impressive medieval barrel vault dates back to the time when this relationship was established and it still has much of the atmosphere of the time, when the House of Nassau tried to extend its political and military influence by establishing close feudal links with local followers.

Dillenburg

Dillenburg, the former princely residence of the House of Nassau, is about a 15-minute drive from Burbach. It was here where William the Silent was born as Count of Nassau, who was to become Prince of Orange and “Father of the Dutch Fatherland”. Several buildings of historical interest are worth a visit and remind us of the importance of Dillenburg as the residence of this eminent soldier and European statesman. Visitors will be particularly impressed by the town’s landmark, the “Wilhelmsturm” (tower), which houses the interesting Orange-Nassau museum, and the “casemates” under the former stately home, which are among the biggest defensive works in Europe ( www.museumsverein-Dillenburg.de).

Dillenburg

Or you just go for a stroll in the picturesque old town with many framework houses (www.dillenburg.de). Dillenburg is on the German Framework Road ( www.deutsche-fachwerkstrasse.de) and on the “Oranjeroute” ( www.oranjeroute.nl).
